Our Story: From Inspiration to Innovation
Gaze AI Limited was born out of a passion for leveraging emerging technologies to address the critical challenges in road asset management. Our journey began when our founder, who had a peripheral involvement in road asset management while working at a national research facility in New Zealand, noticed the high costs associated with road maintenance. Approximately two-thirds of the cost of maintaining a road goes into its upkeep. This realization sparked the idea of utilizing advanced technology to streamline and reduce these costs.
The Vision: Speed and Cost-Effectiveness
Motivated by the potential to make a significant impact, our founder envisioned a solution that combined the efficiency of drone technology with the analytical power of Vision AI. The concept was straightforward yet innovative: drones capture high-resolution images of road surfaces, and our proprietary Vision AI algorithms analyze these images to detect and assess various road conditions such as potholes, edge-break, flushing, crocodile back, and cracks.
Early Support and Validation
In the early stages of our venture, we reached out to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). Their response was overwhelmingly positive, and they expressed keen interest in our ideas. This validation was crucial and encouraged us to proceed with our plans. NZTA’s endorsement came through in the form of a supportive email, confirming their interest in our innovative approach to road assessment.
Proof of Concept: A Promising Start
With NZTA’s encouragement, we partnered with Opus International Consultants to run a proof of concept in 2018. The results were extremely promising. Our technology demonstrated its potential to revolutionize road asset management by providing faster, more accurate, and cost-effective assessments. This success laid the groundwork for the development and refinement of our solutions.
Our Technology: How It Works
Our process begins with drones flying over the road infrastructure, capturing detailed images of the surface. These images are then processed by our Vision AI, which has been meticulously trained to identify and analyze various road conditions. The AI’s capability to perform these tasks accurately and efficiently sets our technology apart from traditional methods, which are often labor-intensive and costly.
